Chamcham the little boy at the Yervaan Palac
A boy entered from around the wooden room divider, dressed in a native Hastana garb with a pale pink sash around his waist and a colorful cloth wrapped elegantly over his small head. On his feet he had formal bamboo bark shoes. Upon his hands the boy was carrying a large copper tray laden with carafes of pink fruit juice and milk, a covered bowl, a covered plate, and a small vase with fresh flowers.
“Can you take me to the kitchen I am very hungry?” Gulaan asked.
The child grinned and asked if he can instead bring some food to honorable guest sir.
“No, honorable guest sir would like to go to the kitchen” Gulaan said while taking an amused liking to the boy. There was an eagerness and curiosity in the child’s nature, not intrusive yet observant.
“You walk ahead I will follow” said Gulaan after the boy had quickly rolled away his blankets.
It seemed to Valstohl that the child had been assigned to take care of ‘honorable guest sir’ in the way the boy kept looking back to make sure his sir was following him. It amused the colonel. At the end of the hallway there were stairs leading down. The boy stopped abruptly and looked back with a deep concerned expression.
“Stairs!! Shall I give my shoulders to honorable guest sir or will honorable guest sir want to climb upon my back?” he asked eagerly.
Gulaan shook his head calmly while trying to restrain an inevitable smile. The way the boy spoke showed his innocence and care, to Valstohl.
“You go down first, and I will follow” said Gulaan.
But the boy was not convinced.
“I will be okay, and you can wait at the bottom if I fall then you can catch me. Okay?” Gulaan said.
The child nodded passionately and ran down the stairs.
